Whitten, Ira L., 1861-1924—Homesteading—Stillwater County (Mont.)
Description
Outdoor photo of Lindsey B. Whitten, the son of homesteader Ira L. Whitten, who had settled on the West Rosebud c. 1896. The elder Whitten, a Maine native, had come into the Musselshell thirty years earlier with his parents. Whitten sold his Stillwater County homestead before 1908 and purchased a farm adjacent to the Crow Agency allotment. He supplied purebred Shorthorn sires to the “79” ranch of Hays, KS, having purchased his original heifers from that ranch.
Ira Whitten married a fellow Maineman on December 24, 1895, in Columbus: a widow, Loira (Buckman) Crawford, who had a daughter, Bertha, from her earlier marriage. The Lindsey of the photograph was their son.
