John Charles Fr�mont (January 21, 1813 � July 13, 1890), was an American military officer, western explorer, and the 1856 candidate of the anti-slavery Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. Fremont was a contemporary / colleague of Frederick Billings in California in the 1850s and 1860s - See Frederick Billings: A Life by Winks. Fremont was not on the Lewis & Clark Expedition (on the picture).
