During the winter months of 1883-1884, nearly 600 Piegans, a quarter of the tribe, died of starvation. The starvation was directly caused by the extermination of the buffalo. Leaflet no. 7 explains how the significant change in a traditional food supply altered the pattern of life in the northern Great Plains region.
