Charles Daniel ("Charlie")
Adams was bom December 14,
1955 at Havre, Montana. He was
the eldest of five children born to
Charles and Virginia (Richter)
Adams. Charlie grew up in the
Inverness community and
received his formal education
there. After graduating from
Inverness High School in 1974 he
began working in construction
with Warhank's of Rudyard".
In 1975 Charlie enlisted into the
U.S. Air Force. He was stationed
in the Azores to fulfill his overseas
duty. During his two enlistments
he attained the rank of Staff
Sergeant (E-5) and specialized in
liquid fuels maintenance.
Following eight years of military
service, Charlie received bis honorable discharge in 1983 and
returned to Montana.
He took a job as custodian at
Blue Sky Schools in Rudyard. In
1987 he moved to Texas to be
near his brother, Mike. While living at Amarillo Charlie met his
wife-to-be, Gaylon Widener, and
they were married in 1991. During
those seven years in Texas,
Charlie worked at the Plains
Creamery and at the Owens-
Coming fiberglass plant in
Amarillo.
Charlie and his family came
back to Montana in 1995. He
began working at J-I Schools
where he eventually became the
Tjeadcustodlan. In October of
2003 he resigned his position at J-
I and moved to Great Falls. While
there he took a job with Dick
Anderson Construction. In May
of 2004 Charlie was diagnosed
with adenocarcinoma. During this
past month he had been cared for
by his family at their Great Falls
home, where he died peacefully
' on Sunday morning June 27,
2004. He was 48 years old.
Aj an infant Charlie was bap-
tized in the Catholic faith at
Sacred Heart Church in Inverness.
During his high school years
Charlie enjoyed athletics and he
participated in all sports. As an
adult Charlie spent most of his
leisure time either hunting or fishing. He was a "cowboy at heart"
with a lifelong love of horses, old
western movies, and country
music.
Charlie was a hard worker who
was never afraid to "get his hands
dirty" and always took great pride
in his work His good work ethic,
attitude and integrity were some
of the reasons he was so well-
liked in the community. He was
loved by the old and young alike!
After Charlie was diagnosed with
cancer, the J-I students dedicated
the State Track Meet to him.
Charlie and Gaylon were
presently raising Gaylon's two
grandsons, whom Charlie loved
as his own. He beamed with pride
as he taught them his personal
hunting and fishing skills, and
offered fatherly advice directing
them towards manhood.
Friends and family used several
nicknames for Charlie, including
Herk" (short for Hercules), "Little
Charlie," and "Young Charlie,"
Charlie is survived by his wife,
Gaylon Adams of Great Falls;
two sons: Charles and Jacob
Adams of Bossier City,
Louisiana; four stepchildren:
Carrie Davis of Borger, Texas*
Brad Rice of Dumas, Texas, Jake
Rice of Great Falls, and Jolene
Warnke of Great Falls; two grandsons: Michael and Justin Baze of
Great Falls; his parents, Charles
and Virginia Adams of Inverness;
three siblings: Mike Adams of
Sand Coulee, Todd Adams of
Helena, and Shelly VanWechel of
Joplin; and numerous aunts,
uncles, nieces, nephews and
cousins. Charlie was preceded in
death by an infant brother.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday July
1st at the Inverness Cemetery by
Father Joe Diekhans. Scripture
readings were by Larry Horinek
and the eulogy was shared by
Aubrey Miller. Taped musical
selections included "Calling All
Angels" and "Wind Beneath My
Wings." The congregation sang
"Amazing Grace." Military rites
by the Havre V.F.W. group
included firing squad, Taps, and
flag presentation. A reception followed at the Inverness Steak
House. Arrangements by
Rockman Funeral Chapel,
Chester.
