Whitehall man drowns, Lake Elwell
The Liberty County Sheriffs
office reported Thursday that
James Lane Allen Jr., 39, of
Whitehall, a Tiber Dam construction worker, drowned in
Lake Elwell.
The man suffered cramps
while swimming with a 15 year
old daughter Wednesday evening, according to Sheriff Richard Burrows. Three other children of the victim were watching from shore, he said.
The sheriff said the incident
occurred about .5:11 p.m. The
body was recovered about two
" hours -.-later,,, by rescue. ..worker*.
of the sheriffs department, an
arabuliiice crew and a fellow
eoHstruelioK worker who is a
diver.
The man was found in water
about 20-25 feet deep. Lake
Elwell is the reservoir behind
Tiber Dam.
Born in Butte, Allen attended school there and served in
the U.S. Army before going
into construction work. At the
time of his death he was
employed by R.L. Johnson Construction Co., the main contractor on the Tiber Dam modification project.
Funeral rites were held
Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St.
Theresa's Gatholic Church in
Whitehall.
Survivors are three daughters, Kris, Traci and Jennifer,
and a son, Cory, all of Butte;
parents, Mr. and Mrs. James
Allen Sr. of Whitehall, and two
brothers and a sister.
The drowning occurred in
what has been named the VFW
swimming area, across a cove
from where at one time numerous boat houses were located.
It has been a very popular
swimming area.
The drowning brings to four
the number of lives lost in the
lake. Of these, three have been
in the past 13 months. May 26
of this year Charles Grice Jr.
of Big Sandy drowned near the
dam. June 15, 1978 Joe Lever-
dure of Great Falls drowned
near the same area. In May of
1959 Aloyse Nold of Gildford
drowned following a boating
accident in the Willow Creek
arm of tie lake.
