MESSAGE OF THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BUTES TO THE HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BUTTE. Gentlemen: For a third time the voters of Butte have chosen me as their chief executive. I would, be very ungrateful if I did not recognize this fact and appreciate the confidence placed in me by the people of our city. A wonderful victory often tempts people to slacken their efforts and rest upon their laurels. Contrary to this attitude I feel that even greater responsibilities have been placed upon me and in consequence it will require a continuance of sqr very best efforts if we are to progress in city affairs as fast in the next two years as we have in the last four. A fast pace has been set by the city in the line of progress and it will be difficult to maintain the same speed, but it will not be impossible. We must keep our stride and I intend to do my part. Much could be said about the accomplishments of the list few ^* years; it would make a long progressive story if told in detail. This is not at all necessary at this time. 'That mi are interested in is the building of a future Butte and the well beiny of its citizens, It might be well to summarize the past in order to plan the future. Retrospect ion ■a—Hi—imt^im" "ft *^ummi»*^+*iim*t''*tf0i*imi**H*imiM*mm>»iM'*»**» Four years ago our city is in a deplorable condition physically and financially and the task of bringing it back seemed almost impossible. Good, honest, efficient men and women were placed at the head of the various city departments. In the two years that followed politics and political rackets were literally kicked out of city affairs. Many old policies were replaced with gooo principles and good sound business judgment took the place of political expediencies. The city was taken from the verge of bankruptcy and elevated to a state where it enjoyed excellent credit. This enabled us to refinance
