Last week the Rocky Fork coal
mine was closed down lor a few days
for the purpose of repairing some
machinery. Tnis taken in connection witn the action of the company
in discharging the president of tlie
miner's union lead many to believe
that a strike was on. but work has
been reMitned.
The State Capitol l'uihling commission are at piesenl visiting llie
different stone quari ies of I.ho d'.ate
and are examining tbe sandstone
quarry in the vicinity of Hidings today. Jt is quite probable t-hat the
commission could tind just the quality of stone they require were they to
examine the quarries in the vicinity

An exchange says that time and

company's new ditch has been completed and the work will be entirely
finished June 1st. I*vo more work'
will be done this winter. The paper
mill excavation has been completed
and the work of building tlie mill
will be proceeded with in the early
spring.
The shipments of cattle from Fort
Hen tun this yeai were 384 cars and of
sheep-441 cars, says the Stockgrowers
Journal. This total has only been
exceeded once—about seven or eight
years ago, when prairie fires destroy*-
ed the range about Jiig Sandy, and
Baltic and Galata were still to come.
That season the total was nearly
1,0(10 cars.
It is reported in Great Falls and

north of Edmonton in the Northwest

well known in Montana, having for a

The Smith Brothers ranch, near
Ma Hinsdale.' is one of the oldest
ranches in Montana, says the "Wool
and Cotton Beporter. It was established in 1872 with a heard of only
J100 sheep. The owners now have 48.-
000 head and control .'53.000 acres of
land. John Smith now manages the
entire ranch and cuts 2.000 tons ot
hay a year. Seventy miles of fence
inclose tlie owned and leased lands.
