THE POPLAR SHOPPER AND STAFF MATMEN WIN AT MALTA The Poplar Indian wrestling team took third, placing eight of the nine squad members at the Malta Invitational wrestling tournament last Sat. Eight teams were there . Malta was first, Chinook, second, Poplar, *hird, Plenty-wood, fourth. Cther teams were: Shelby, Havre, Wolf Point and Nashua. Poplar had two tournament champions. Paul Reddies won the 138 lb. class, and Steve Schogunn won at 132. Carey Youpee (112) and Mark Frederick (167) earned second place medals, Tom Nordwick (126) took third, while Maury Johnston (112), Perry Morton (145) and Jim Jaques (155) each placed fourth . "We would have done better with a full twelve-man team, said coach Monty Cranston, "what's Important, however, is that *!ie boys we brought d a heck of a good job. "I'm real pro.jd of em.<; January 3rd the Poplar team travels to Glendive for a double dual against the Red Devils and the Miles City Cowboys. The next home match won't be until Jan. 9 (Friday night at 6:30), a dual against Medicine Lake. Saturday they wrestle the Wolves at Wolf Point, I p.m Mark your calendars so you'l come out and support these young competitors. ON HONOR LIST The administration and faculty of DeVry Institute of Technology informs us that Michael G. Sauer qualified for the Honor List, the past academic quarter. This honor is awarded only to those students who have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or better out of a possible 4.0, for the quarter. Mike is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Ed. Sauer of Poplar. BECOMES SECRETARY The National College of Business, Rapid City, S.D. informs us that LuAnn krone, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Louis Krone of Poplar, is a secretory for S. D. Office located in Medical-Dental Building (Former Bank Building) WRESTLER OF THE WEEK CAREY YOUPEE CHINOOK DOWNED - BY THE INDIANS Excitement was lacking as the Poplar Indians soundly defeated the Chincsk Sugar-beetersin non-conference action Saturday night. With four players in double figures, the Indians once again proved 'Yhe power is In the east" The Ind fans shot on average 42�o from the field and a sizzling 70�c from the charity line. Nick Cain led the Indian attack with 17 points, followed closely behind by Albert Kirn with 16, and Tom Granbois with 15. Rusty Walking Eagle came off the bench and made an impressive showing, tossing in 14 points. The Indians begin conference play on Jan. 3rd at Plenty- FRESHMEN WIN OVER PEERLESS The Poplar Freshman team came home the winner on Thursdav right as they took a close game from Peerless. The final score was 30-29. Wally Cain stole o pass with 35 sec. fo go, ran the length of the court and scored the winning bosket. Coin was the leading scorer with 16. Going into Christmas vacation, the freshmen hold a 3-2 record. The freshmen see action at Plentywood or Jan. 3.
