The groups are from Fort Belknap, Rocky Boy and Fort Peck Reservations. The training will provide the new firefighters with experience in all phases of fire control. The picture is field training to simulate an actual fin-fighting situation, CENTENNIAL NEWS July 3, 4, 5, 1992 will soon be here! Those are the dates for Poplar's 100th Birthday Party. A handful of dedicated people continue to attend the monthly Centennial meetings, this is fine but we need TOO! The planning stage is nearing completion, but we still can use new ideas and suggestions. What do you want to do? What do you want to see? What do you want to cat? What do you want for Music? What do you want for Entertainment? Come help with the action. The next Centennial meeting is Tuesday, June 18th at 8:00 I'M in the Legion Dining Room. Want a Centennial Belt Buckle?? Check with Finnicum Furniture. They're really something special and they're going fast! TRANS-AMERICAN BICYCLE TREK As may he aware, up until lust year the American l.ung Association hud organized u bicycle trek to support research for disease prevention. The program included a stop in I'oplar Tor one night as the yQU trekkers continued on to Atlantic City, "New Jersey. Last summer the program was suspended Tor one year. The bicycle riders will again he making their journey from coast to coast this summer. They will be staying in our town on June 18. Hopefully this will again become an annual event in our summer calendar. The number of Hikers has decreased from near 350 in 1989 down to between Nil or 9(1 this year. They will he pitching camp next Tuesday on the football field. They will be coining from Fori Peck and will camp overnite in Poplar, they will leave on Wednesday morning for several day lay over in Williston. N.I). The following are taken from the Hikers Travelogue: Monday-Day 15: MALTA-FORT PECK Rumor has || that there is no place with mosquitoes quite so intimidating as on the Suco flats. Veteran riders report that Suco mosquitoes can overtake a bicyclist pedaling at 20 mph and proceed to make a meal on any available open skin. Cutters is reported to be much more effective at repelling them than Off. We will be camping near the famous Fort Peck Dam, the largest earth-filled hydraulic-dam in the world. Tuesday-Day 16: FORI' PECK � POPLAR When our first cross-country trek was in the planning stages in 1987, we were told "even us Montanans don't quite know what to make of Poplar." After three tours with an overnight stop in this tiny town in the middle of the Fort Peck Reservation, we can say "We think it's great!" Tremendous lm al support has made our stays LOURDES PARISH PLAN FATHER'S DAY PROGRAM Sunday Mass at Our l.adv of Lourdes Parish will be moved from the morning to 3 I'M in the afternoon. If the weather allows the Mass will be outdoors. The Special Mass on June 16th will be in honor of Father's Day. FLAG BURNING CEREMONIES The Thomas Holt Wynia Post#55, Montana Dept. of the American legion will hold a "Flag Burning Ceremony" on Friday June 14th. The Ceremony will be in the Legion Parking Lot on the East side of the building. June 14th is Flag Day. The ceremony will be conducted by officers and members of Post #55, Robert Coleman is Commander. This is very impressive ceremony and the Public is invited to bring all their unservicable flags to the Legion Club on or before Flag Day. Burning of Unservicable flags is the recommended way of their disposable. The Ceremony will begin at 9:00 P.M. The public is invited and urged to attend. SSI76. Respect for flag No disresepct should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor. (a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. (b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. (c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free. cont. on pg. 8 CHAMPION BULL RIDER Zack Atkinson is the District I high school rodeo champion hullrider. The District I rodeo was held June 7 & 8 in Malta. On June 7, it was a night rodeo, Zack was the only contestant to ride his hull, scoring a S3. The second go-round was held Staurduy afternoon on June 8th., Zack scored the highest score of the day, a 61 to win the hullriding and giving him a total score of 114 points for the rodeo and the championship. Zack missed heing "Rookie of the Year" by 14 points. Zack received a belt buckle and the "Charlie Cole" Memorial trophy for the highest score in hull riding. The award is In memory of Charlie Cole of Hays, Montana, who was a high school State Champion bull rider and was killed in a car accident in 1989. Zack was also entered in another rodeo that was held hack-to-back with the District rodeo. It was held Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Zack was bucked alT his first bull, but came back strong the next day, scoring a 67 on his hull. In that rodeo he won first place for the second go-round and second in the average. Zack had a great weekend! SHRINE CIRCUS This year the Shrine Circus will he held in Wolf Point on Monday the 24th of June. The shows will be held at 2:00 P.M. and at 7:.V1 P.M. at the Wolf Point Stampede Grounds. Again, we are asking your support of this area wide project. All moneys made on this project are used to transport Children and Parents to the Crippled Children's Hospital in Spokane, Washington and the Shriners Burns Hospital in Calvaston, Texas. Once a child is accepted for treatment in any Shrine Hospital all medical expense are paid by the Shrine. The local Shrine cont. on pg. 8 .f- SPEC. JEFFERY S. GONGWER SPEC. Jeffrey Scott Gongwer, having returned from the Persian Gulf Area in early May is now stationed with the 701st Military Intelligence Brigade at Field Station Augsburg in the Federal Republic of Germany where he will remain until his unit deactivates in mid 1992. SPEC. Gongwer was attached to the U.S. Army's Vllth Corps during it's March north through Iraq in Operation Desert Storm. SPEC. Gongwer is a 1989 Poplar High School graduate. His parents, Dr. and Mrs. Rollan J. Gongwer, were employed in the Poplar HIS and the Poplar School System for several years. They now live in Clonic, Arizona. His parents state that they are very thankful for the prayers and concerns of friends in the Poplar area during Jeffs tour and for God's protecting hand on JefT. SPEC. Gongwer's new address: SPEC. This two-year project consists of two phases. The first phase, whkh is currently underway, involves a science professional making a presentation each month during the school year to each fifth and sixth grade classroom in Brockton, Poplar, Wolf Point, and Frater. Presenters and topic* to date Include: BUI Ijwkner, (Project WILD); Jim Llebclt, MT Fish, Wildlife and Parks (animals of MT); Dr. H. Ilopson (animal diseases); Julie Kosslgnol.
